Recreation & Active Transportation Master Plan

On February 11, 2025, the Town of Altona formally adopted their Recreation and Active Transportation Master Plan, a document that will guide Altona's recreation and active transportation infrastructure for the next 20 years, ensuring accessibility, inclusivity and year round use for residents and visitors.

We worked with Urban Systems Ltd. to create this plan, with input from the community through surveys, open houses, and focus groups. Thank you to the members of the community and user groups who shared their opinions and perspectives, and reviewed several drafts of this document before it was finalized.

The new plan reflects Altona’s diverse and evolving cultural needs, responds to the changing demands of both residents and visitors, and incorporates current trends in parks, recreation, and active transportation facilities. The goal of the report is to provide long-term strategic guidance on the development and maintenance of parks, outdoor recreational amenities, and active transportation infrastructure and trails.

Why now?

The previous Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan, which was created in 1997-1998, resulted in the expansion of greenspaces, the development of the Altona Aquatic Centre, the Millennium Exhibition Centre, and multiple kilometers of multi-use paths. Since then, community groups have also championed initiatives such as the Bridge Skate Park, an upgraded playground in Centennial Park, Access Field, a disc golf course, and the community garden and orchard that continues to grow and expand. Altona has experienced steady growth and transformation along with changing needs and demands. A surge in enthusiasm for new recreational opportunities and active transportation initiatives within the community has been a key factor in launching this new plan for the next 20 years.

The full plan is attached below, including many pages of research and community engagement responses. While this document is very detailed, it is only a plan, and not a step by step "to do" list. The Town of Altona will continue to respond and adapt to changing circumstances over the course of the next twenty years while implementing some of the items from within this plan.
