Community Garden

The Altona Community Garden has been operated and managed by a three person task force, under the direction of the Altona Community Action Network. Over the past number of years, the Altona Community Garden has continued to grow, thanks to the dedication of the ACAN team, the generosity of our local business community, and the hard work from all gardeners!

From the very beginning, the garden has included a space in the middle known as The Commons – a meeting point for gardeners to share tools, water, compost, advice, and fellowship.

In 2020, the Community Garden task force launched an ambitious project to enhance The Commons by including a spacious, timber frame pavilion, accessible washrooms, and accessible raised garden beds. Shovels hit the ground in summer of 2021 to start construction of this new jewel for the community.

Gardeners at the Altona Community Garden benefit from hands-on guidance and advice on caring for plants, as well as shared resources and advice.

The Town of Altona is grateful to ACAN for their vision and passion, and the many generous businesses and individuals who have supported this project, as well as to the gardeners who dedicate their time and energy to tending the land and growing food for themselves and one another.

For more information about the garden, or to inquire about registering for a plot, contact Jack Heppner at altonagardening@gmail.com or 204-304-0656, or visit their website.

Recently, a blog post was shared on an individuals experience at the grand opening of this pavillion. If you are interested in hearing their thoughts, you can read it here.
