Community Grants

Community Grants:

The Town of Altona supports the enhancement of a positive quality of life for all its residents. One means of achieving this goal is through the provision of grants to organizations that contribute to the general interest and advantage of the community. The Town also recognizes that supporting volunteer community-based organizations is often fundamental to maintaining this quality of life. This policy has been formulated to foster consistency with the awarding of grants to groups whose benefits and services are enjoyed by the residents of the Town.

Eligibility Criteria:

The project, program or services provided by the organization will:

  1. Enhance the quality of life and well-being of many Altona citizens.
  2. Benefit the community over a long period of time.
  3. Improve the environmental sustainability of the community.
  4. Provide important community support to underserved populations.
  5. Support recreational and cultural initiatives.
  6. Have community support (eg. financial or volunteer contributions).

2026 Community Grant Recipients

The Town of Altona has issued 2026 Community Grants to the following organizations, with a total value of $56,100. 

Altona Youth for Christ: 

Youth For Christ Altona (YFC) is a non-profit organization that is committed to supporting local youth by providing a safe space and offering a range of programs and events that engage and support all teens regardless of their background. 

This grant will aid the organization’s utility costs to ensure that they can focus their financial support on creating the best quality programming possible.

Altona Minor Hockey 

Altona Minor Hockey is a local organization that promotes and encourages youth to play hockey in our area. They work to teach kids the game, help them grow in skill and confidence, and focus on having fun. 

This grant went toward supporting Altona Minor Hockey in hosting the U15 Female A & B Provincial Hockey Championships over three days, bringing teams from across Manitoba to compete in a provincially sanctioned championship event. A total of 19 games will be played during the tournament, with 16 games hosted in Sunflower Gardens Arena in Altona and the remaining three games hosted in Gretna. 

Hosting this event locally provides a high-level competitive opportunity for female athletes, supports the continued growth and development of female hockey, and showcases Altona as a welcoming and capable host community for provincial-level sporting events. 

The Community Exchange 

The Community Exchange serves as a hub to provide a safe space to anyone, regardless of their background or identity. They offer various programs and connect people with services and resources to support living and thriving in Altona and the surrounding area. This grant was used in support of their mission to provide a safe and welcoming space through Community Connector Program.

Altona Community Action Network

Altona Community Action Network (ACAN) was founded by citizens invested in our community’s sustainability and ability to deal with climate change. Over the years they have been involved in small and large projects alike including: establishing year round curbside composting in Altona, managing the community garden, earth day events, compost give-away, community consultation, and much more. 

This grant went towards the Community Orchard and Edible Garden Assistant position, who will play a key role in enhancing and maintaining these valuable community spaces.

Altona and Area Family Resource Centre 

The Altona and Area Family Resource Centre (AAFRC) is a non-profit organization supporting all parents/caregivers in Altona and the surrounding area to help their preschool aged children thrive and reach their full potential. They do this through free parent-child programming that focuses on literacy and learning, physical activity, and positive parenting.

Altona Community Christmas Dinner 

Altona Community Christmas Dinner is designed to foster connection, belonging, and inclusivity during the holiday season by bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. This initiative not only addresses food security and social isolation but also strengthens community ties by encouraging volunteerism and collaboration across age groups. Their long-term goal is to build a sustainable annual event supported by local businesses, residents, and community partners. 

This funding will support the Altona Community Christmas Dinner by covering the rental cost of the Rhineland Pioneer Centre, ensuring the event can be hosted in a safe, accessible, and centrally located municipal facility. 

Altona & District Heritage Research Institute

The Altona & District Heritage Research Centre Inc. (Altona & Area Archive) is a volunteer-led archive dedicated to preserving the history of Altona and the surrounding area through old photographs, newspapers, maps, journals, and many other documents and information.  

The Altona & District Heritage Research Centre Inc. (Altona & Area Archives) was established in 1999 as a non-profit, volunteer-run organization in Manitoba. Its mission is to preserve and provide access to paper documents and photographs that capture the history of Altona and the surrounding communities within the boundaries of the Municipality of Rhineland. Their office is located at room 116-125 Centre Ave E (Golden West Building), and they are open to the public on non-holiday Mondays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Regional Connections Immigrant Services 

Regional Connections Immigrant Services supports newcomers in rural Manitoba through settlement, employment, language, and community integration programs tailored to help individuals and families thrive. 

This grant will support Culture Festival 2026 in Altona. Everyone attending Culture Fest will have the opportunity to meet and speak with newcomer table hosts about their home countries, cultures, and immigration journeys to Canada. Through song and dance, performers—a combination of professional and local artists—will share their cultures and traditions during the entertainment program, while also explaining the significance of various customs through the art forms they have chosen to present to guests. 

Altona Elks 

The Altona Elks Lodge is a community-focused organization dedicated to supporting local initiatives, charitable programs, and events that strengthen the Altona area. Through volunteer efforts and fundraising activities, the Altona Elks continue to make meaningful contributions that benefit residents of all ages and help foster a strong sense of community spirit. 

This grant went towards enhancing the quality of life and well-being of Altona residents by supporting programs, services, and community improvements that create positive and lasting impacts throughout the community.

Rhineland Food Bank 

The Rhineland Food Bank provides groceries for anyone within the R.M. of Rhineland who struggles with food insecurity. This grant helped provide food relief for families in need in our community.

South Central Regional Library 

Every year, the South Central Regional Library hosts a Summer Reading Club at its branches, providing free activities, prizes, and summer fun for children in our communities throughout the summer. The goal of the program is to encourage kids to keep reading and stay engaged in literacy over the summer, participate in our in-branch activities, and most importantly, have fun! 

This funding will go toward paying for the pool rental for the Altona Library Summer Reading Club Fun Day.
