Chief of Police

Reporting to the Altona Police Board, the Chief of Police is accountable for all police service operations, community and media relations, management of financial resources, human resources and information technology, and the collection, collation, dissemination and security of police information and data. The Chief of Police leads the development of a vision, identifying and evaluating the strategic directions and objectives for the Police Service.

Youth Employment Opportunities

Each year, the Town of Altona creates a number of Youth Employment Opportunities over the summer. Summer Staff provide crucial services to the community, while also giving youth an opportunity to expand their work experience and skillset. For the purposes of these positions, youth is defined as ages 15-29. Keep reading to see if one of the opportunities below is right for you!

Public Works

Public Works Summer Staff are energetic, self-motivated individuals who want to serve their community. They report to the Public Works Foreman in the operation and maintenance of infrastructure within the Town of Altona.

Tasks include:

  • cutting grass, watering flowers, pruning trees & bushes, and other landscaping
  • mosquito control
  • storm drain maintenance
  • sidewalk construction
  • other general town maintenance

Public Works Summer Staff must have a valid driver’s license, CSA approved footwear, and be available to start work at the beginning of May. As with all Town of Altona employees, they must complete a criminal record check as well.

Altona/Rhineland Waste Disposal Site

The ideal Landfill Summer Staff member will be friendly, energetic and self-motivated. The term for this position begins at the end of June, making it a good fit for youth who are graduating high school this year, or are otherwise not available before the end of June. The successful candidate will report to the Landfill Foreman in the operation and maintenance of the Altona/Rhineland Waste Disposal Site.  

This position will include a variety of tasks such as:

  • Cutting grass and other yard maintenance
  • General site maintenance
  • Customer service, including scale operation, payment collection and directing customers to correct disposal areas
  • Equipment washing
  • And other duties as assigned

The working hours for this full-time term position are 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will earn $13.50/hr.

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and their own CSA approved footwear. Experience operating yard maintenance equipment such as riding mowers and weed whackers is an asset, as is experience with customer service, or with heavy equipment operation.

Parks and Recreation

Altona Aquatic Centre:

Lifeguards/Swim Instructors

AAC Lifeguards & Swim Instructors are fun, friendly and energetic. They are dedicated to providing a safe and positive experience to all visitors. Lifeguards and swim instructors must be fully qualified, and submit copies of their certifications.

As with all Town of Altona employees, they must complete a criminal record check.

Ticket Clerk/Campground Attendant

Ticket Clerks/Campground Attendants are friendly and organized. They are committed to providing excellent and accessible customer service, and helping make each visit a great experience.

Parks:

Parks Summer Staff are self-motivated, energetic folks who like to work outside, and are dedicated to providing a positive environment for their community. They report to the Recreation Operations Foreman, and are responsible for a number of different tasks.

Parks Summer Staff must have a valid driver’s license, CSA approved footwear, and be available to start work at the beginning of May. As with all Town of Altona employees, they must complete a criminal record check as well.

Administration

This summer, we are looking for an Administrative Summer Staff member to join our team at the Civic Centre. This individual should be project-driven, and a great communicator. They should also have an interest in working with the public, and in using digital tools.

Projects will include enumeration to prepare for the municipal election, updating historical cemetery records by reviewing physical markers and historical documents, reviewing uptake of town programs, and more. The Administrative Summer Staff can expect variety in their day, with a combination of indoor and outdoor work, and to be responsible for seeing projects through from beginning to end. They can expect to learn new skills, expand on previous skills, and delve deeper into the projects that are most interesting to them.

A valid drivers license is an asset for this position. As with all Town of Altona employees, successful applicants must complete a criminal record check.
